Airway Clearance

Airway Clearance

What is airway clearance?

Airway Clearance (also known as chest physiotherapy) plays an essential role in the management of chronic lung diseases (e.g., COPD and bronchiectasis) and individuals recovering from respiratory illnesses or major surgery. It encompasses a variety of techniques to remove excess mucus and secretions from the lungs, including:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Positioning and postural drainage
  • Manual techniques
  • Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices
  • Nebuliser therapy

Benefits of Airway Clearance

Clearing excess mucus and secretions from your lungs will help to:

  • Ease symptoms: Reduces breathlessness, chest tightness and persistent coughing
  • Reduce complications: Lower risk of exacerbations, chest infections and hospital admissions
  • Improve lung function: Reduce airway obstruction leading to improved oxygenation and lung capacity
  • Increase exercise tolerance: Greater ease and comfort when engaging in physical activities
  • Enhance quality of life: Improves physical, emotional, and social well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you do not need a referral to begin airway clearance treatment at Heart & Lung Physio. However, it is recommended that you talk to your GP and/or specialist about your health concerns. If you have a respiratory condition, you may be eligible for a chronic disease management plan (CDP) which allows you to receive Medicare rebates for up to 5 sessions with Heart & Lung Physio. We will collaborate with your healthcare team, sharing findings and progress updates to ensure a comprehensive approach to your care.

If you have conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, or any condition that leads to excess mucus production and difficulty clearing mucus from your lungs, airway clearance therapy could be beneficial. Signs like persistent cough, regularly coughing up mucus or phlegm, or recurrent chest infections might indicate a need for this therapy. Effective airway clearance contributes to better lung function, reduced symptoms, improved exercise tolerance, and an overall enhanced quality of life for individuals with respiratory conditions.

While coughing is a natural reflex that helps clear mucus and foreign particles from your airways, it may not always be sufficient to clear your lungs, especially if you have a respiratory condition. Conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or bronchiectasis can lead to thick and stubborn mucus that may not be effectively cleared by coughing alone. This is where airway clearance techniques, such as active cycle of breathing technique (ACBT), autogenic drainage, or the use of an oscillating PEP device come into play. These techniques are designed to help mobilise and remove mucus more effectively, promoting better lung health.

The frequency of airway clearance depends on your specific condition and needs. Generally, it’s recommended to perform these exercises one to two times a day. Your physiotherapist will design a personalised plan that suits your condition, and they might adjust the frequency based on your progress.

At Heart & Lung Physio, we teach you with airway clearance techniques that you can integrate into your daily routine for long-term respiratory management. We will provide thorough guidance, teaching you one or more methods that are suited to your condition and individual needs. The advantage of learning these techniques is that you’ll be equipped with valuable tools to manage your respiratory health independently. However, it’s important to note that regular communication with your physiotherapist is still recommended to monitor your progress, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure that you’re getting the most out of your airway clearance regime. This collaborative approach ensures the best outcomes for your ongoing respiratory health.

Airway clearance techniques are generally safe and effective when performed under the guidance of a trained physiotherapist. However, it’s important to consider individual factors before starting certain techniques. For instance, individuals with specific respiratory conditions might have an increased risk of developing complications like a pneumothorax (a condition where air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall) during certain techniques. To ensure your safety, it’s important that we review any recent CT scans or X-rays you might have had. These imaging studies provide valuable information about your lung structure and can help identify any potential risk factors. By carefully assessing your medical history and imaging results, we can tailor the airway clearance techniques to minimise the risk of complications and ensure a safe and effective approach to your therapy.
